In the News

In an interview with Self, Rebecca Romijn told the magazine that pilates helps her stay slim and limber. "I feel leaner and stronger and longer."

In the same issue Virginia Madsen (Sideways, Firewall) shared her weight loss success story with readers: "After seven months of cardio, weights and pilates, I lost 20 pounds."

ELLE magazine's Body issue offered advice from kinesiology professor Catherine Jackson, PhD to readers who want to look less buff and streamline their bodies. "Pilates and Yoga will elongate muscles and tendons – which may make them appear slimmer."


Marie Claire magazine's feature, 10 Shortcuts to Strong Sexy Abs suggests trading crunches for pilates. "To firm up the muscles beneath your love handles – known as external obliques – try the Pilates Hundreds."

Mommy Academy magazine from the Philippines, recently featured an article about Mataki City Licensed Training Center owner Vivian Zapanta. Entitled, Pilates 101, the article hails Vivian as a pilates expert and offers advice about who benefits from pilates and how beginners can get started.


In a health Q&A, personal trainer Jennifer McConnery explained how pilates builds muscle to a Flare magazine reader: "you're using your own body weight as resistance, so those exercises are good for toning and building some muscle."

Margaret Velez of Volar Pilates, STOTT PILATES' New York City Licensed Training Center, is featured in Tu Vida Your Life magazine this month. The article profiles Margaret's triumph over breast cancer, her career as a dancer, and how she juggles time between running her own pilates studio and being a mother.

WARM UP FIRST

STARTING POSITION

1 KNEELING with equal weight on hands and knees, knees apart slightly. Hands directly under shoulders and knees directly under hips. Spine in neutral position, neither arched nor flattened.


EXERCISE

To prepare, INHALE

2 EXHALE Starting from tailbone, round spine allowing head to bend toward mat.

3 INHALE Hold position and tighten abdominal muscles.


EXERCISE cont'd

4 EXHALE Starting from tailbone, return spine to starting position, bringing head up last but keep eyes looking down.


Complete 3-5 repetitions
