On March 15, the Wall Street Journal ran a story entitled Is Your Pilates Instructor a Health Hazard?

Lindsay G. Merrithew was quoted in this story, which underscores the demaind for qualified pilates instructors and suggests that weekend and short-term training courses are inadequate to safeguard the health of clients.

It publicizes the PMA's move to design the first national accreditation test for pilates instructors administered by a third party.

Roll Over        Be certain to warm up before exercising. Read these important cautions
STARTING POSITION
Lying on your back, spine imprinted and legs extended on a diagonal. Arms extended along sides, palms down, scapulae stabilized.


EXERCISE
INHALE flex hips to hinge legs toward torso.

EXHALE sequentially articulate the spine through flexion lifting it off the mat, one vertebra at a time, from tailbone to upper thoracic area, reaching legs overhead, parallel to mat. Allow legs to lower with control by flexing hips further so toes touch mat if possible. Rest weight across scapulae, not on neck.

INHALE lift legs parallel to mat and separate slightly wider than shoulder width apart.

EXHALE sequentially lower the spine down to mat from thoracic to tailbone. Once stable and spine is imprinted, reach legs out on a diagonal as low as possible, maintaining imprint and move legs back together.

Complete 6-8 repetitions altogether; 3-4 rolling over with legs together and rolling down with legs separated; 3-4 rolling over with legs separated shoulder width and rolling down with legs together.


FOCUS
Avoid pressure, tension or pain in neck

Lift spine sequentially so each vertebra peels off mat separately during roll over and makes contact separately during roll down

Roll spine off mat so that weight rests only on thoracic spine, not on neck

Use abdominals to achieve spinal articulation, instead of throwing weight of legs overhead and tensing shoulders to roll down

Once spine is rolled up off mat with legs parallel to ground, flex hips and lengthen hamstrings to lower toes toward mat rather than rolling onto neck
