In the News

IDEA Fitness Journal featured a study that concluded Pilates matwork classes can play a valuable role in improving the health and fitness of young girls. It also found that 11-year-old girls who regularly took Pilates matwork classes reduced their body weight and considered it an enjoyable form of exercise.

The December 2006 issue of Dance Magazine included a holiday gift guide with gift ideas for dancers and the STOTT PILATES Express* Mat was among the top picks. This portable mat is perfect for toting to the gym or studio and is available in four colors.


A recent issue of IDEA Fitness Journal featured an article on low-back pain, the most common cause of job-related disability in the United States. In the study, the patients who did Pilates experienced more relief from their symptoms than those who went through typical treatment programs.

In the same issue, a prenatal article recommends several exercises for pregnant participants. Selected exercises, such as Swimming Prep, are Pilates-based and concentrate on strengthening the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.

Spotlight FAQ:
Will my STOTT PILATES certification courses count toward my CECs?

A: STOTT PILATES Certification courses, such as Intensive Mat-Plus and Intensive Reformer train you in the core STOTT PILATES method and exempt you from having to accumulate CECs until the following calendar year.

For example, if you become certified in Matwork in December 2006 and you take a Reformer course in February 2007, you do not have to start earning CECs until January 2008.

STARTING POSITION

LYING ON SIDE
with hips and knees bent to 90 degrees.
Bottom arm supporting head, top hand resting on mat. Spine is in a neutral position, neither arched nor flattened.


EXERCISE

INHALE
keep top elbow bent and lift arm to ceiling.

EXHALE
rotate torso backward keeping hips still.

4

INHALE
stay

5

EXHALE
keeping top elbow bent and return torso to starting position.

Complete 3-5 repetitions on each side
