Real Men Do Pilates

Today, a growing number of men are doing Pilates. More and more elite athletes, such as Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant, are choosing this form of exercise to complement their vigorous training for sports conditioning. In an upcoming article, “Real Men Do Pilates: Get An Edge On Your Competition”, Kerrie Lee Brown, VP, Communications at STOTT PILATES®, focuses on sports figures who are gaining an edge through Pilates to improve muscle tone and help prevent injury. Sally Belanger, Assistant Program Director for STOTT PILATES, trains Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo, and says, “Pilates helps to build and strengthen the core muscular system, allowing the large muscles [primary movers] and levers to work on explosive movements and strength.” Look for this article in the Winter 2007 issue of Inside Fitness magazine, on newsstands in mid-December or read it here.

Pilates Isn’t Just for Adults

Did you know that more and more children and teens are doing Pilates? Check out the youth special edition of OnSite Fitness for “Pilates…Not Just for Adults”, an article that explores the increasing popularity of Pilates as a way to improve kids’ fitness levels and self-esteem. Pilates is intended for both sports-minded and non-athletic youth, providing much-needed variety and fun through the different types of equipment that can be used. “Children can learn the importance of focus and concentration with Pilates and also gain a sense of fulfillment or success at a level they can relate to,” explains Moira Merrithew, STOTT PILATES co-founder and Master Instructor Trainer. Do You Speak Pilates?

The popularity of Pilates continues to grow all around the world. To meet this ever-increasing demand, STOTT PILATES now provides 10 training manuals and over 120 DVD titles. Some of the training materials are also available in different languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese. CONTINUING EDUCATION


   

Is your continuing education up-to-date?
If you are a Certified STOTT PILATES instructor who completed your exams in 2006 or earlier, it is time to make sure you have completed all your continuing education credits (CECs) for 2007. To maintain your STOTT PILATES instructor status, you need to accumulate 0.6 CECs each calendar year.

How do I earn credits attending STOTT PILATES workshops?

A

When taking a workshop at the STOTT PILATES International Certification Center or a Licensed Training Center, your credits are issued automatically upon completion. You will receive a completion letter from STOTT PILATES listing the appropriate CECs.

For STOTT PILATES workshops or presentations at trade shows, you are responsible for sending the complete documentation to the International Certification Center in Toronto. We require the following:

  • CEC submission form [click here to download]
  • Trade show receipt
  • Workshop completion letter if pre-con was attended

WARM UP FIRST

START POSITION

Lying on stomach on mat. Legs together, front of hips flat on mat.
Hands by shoulders with elbows and nose on mat.


EXERCISE

1

INHALE
Stabilize shoulder blades on back and contract abdominals.

2

EXHALE
Reach upper body off mat, keeping lower ribs and elbows in contact with mat. Keep head in line with back.

3

INHALE
Hold position.

4

EXHALE
Return to starting position.

Complete 5-8 repetitions.
