Scissors in Air....... Be certain to warm up before exercising. Read these important cautions
STARTING POSITION
Lie supine in imprinted position. Keep legs parallel and adducted, extended on diagonal as low as imprint can be maintained, ankles plantar flexed, toes gently pointed. Arms long by sides, palms down, scapulae stabilized.

EXERCISE
to begin...

INHALE flex at hips to hinge legs toward torso, then sequentially articulate spine off mat from tailbone to upper thoracic area and reach legs overhead, parallel to mat.

EXHALE extend hips and reach legs to ceiling, placing hands under iliac crest for support (weight remains on upper thoracic area, with whole spine somewhat flexed).

then...

INHALE stay, continuing to reach legs to ceiling.

EXHALE stabilize pelvis and reach one leg into extension at hip, bringing other leg into flexion at hip and pulsing twice with breath.

INHALE start to switch legs by reaching them to the ceiling so they pass each other in mid-air.
EXHALE stabilize pelvis and reach other leg into extension at hip, bringing opposite leg into flexion at hip and pulsing twice with breath.

Complete 5-10 repetitions of scissoring legs.

FOCUS
avoid pressure, tension or pain in cervical spine
articulate sequentially so each vertebra peels off separately during roll over and makes contact separately during roll down
roll only as far as upper back and not onto neck
maintain contraction of abdominals to prevent extension of lumbar spine and/or rotation of pelvis
avoid resting too much weight on arms
maintain scapular stabilization
reach through legs on pulse, avoid ballistic movement
emphasize reaching leg of extending hip, avoid letting leg of flexing hip drop too much

MODIFICATION
PELVIS ON BARREL Start with pelvis near top of Arc or Small Barrel in an imprinted position and complete exercise as otherwise directed. Barrel lessens abdominal work required and decreases range of motion.
