Side Kick

STARTING POSITION
Lying on your side, pelvis and spine neutral. Legs long with hips bent slightly to angle legs forward for balance. Ankles flexed. Top leg raised to hip height. Head resting on extended bottom arm, palm down. Top hand resting in front of chest on mat for stability, scapula stabilized.

EXERCISE
INHALE keeping top leg straight and ankle flexed, kick leg forward twice with breath (two pulses), maintaining torso stabilization, neutral spine. (two small inhales)

EXHALE stabilize pelvis in neutral and reach leg back gently pointing toes. (one long exhale)

Complete 8-10 repetitions on each side.

FOCUS
-- Maintain abdominal contraction to avoid arching back,
-- especially as leg reaches back.
-- Avoid tension in upper trapezius.
-- Sensation of reaching toes away from crown of head as leg reaches back.
