.exercise of the month .......... Be certain to warm up before attempting this intermediate level exercise.
Side Bend
STARTING POSITION
Seated on one hip, facing side, pelvis and spine in a neutral position. Knees are bent with top leg turned out to side, foot is flat on mat slightly forward of sit-bones. Bottom leg rests on mat with bottom foot behind top foot. Torso is supported on one hand in line with hip, arm extended to side. Top arm is extended and resting on knee with palm up.

EXERCISE
INHALE, stabilize supporting shoulder and lift pelvis toward ceiling, laterally flexing torso, extending knees and connecting inner thighs to create bow shape between hand and feet. At same time, reach free arm overhead; keep eyes focused straight ahead.
EXHALE bend knees and lower pelvis to mat, returning to starting position. Lower free arm to knee.

Repeat 3-5 times on each side.

FOCUS
--
Maintain contraction of abdominals to prevent rib cage from rotating or popping
-- Engage gluteus maximus, hamstrings and abdominals to prevent pelvis from moving into anterior tilt and flexing hip joints
-- Avoid leaning forward, extending or rotating
-- Avoid sinking into shoulder
-- Laterally flex cervical spine relative to thoracic spine
1. starting position
2. lift pelvis toward ceiling
3. return pelvis to mat
