STOTT PILATES is featured in the Fall/Winter 2001 edition of Flare Pregnancy magazine. Moira Merrithew contributed extensively to the article, discussing the many benefits of pilates exercise for pregnant women and suggesting specific exercises to be done at different stages throughout the pregnancy. (Flare Pregnancy is not currently available online, but the Fall/Winter issue is on newsstands now).

Just in time for the holidays, we have new STOTT PILATES clothing available. Our tops are now available in three styles:
  • Square-neck tank (navy or chocolate)
  • High neck camisole (white, black or eggplant)
  • Muscle tee (black)

Exercise of the Month

SPINE STRETCH FORWARD

Use this simple exercise to help reduce stress over the holidays. The goal is to mobilize the spine and let go of tension in the back and shoulders.

TO START:
Stand with your back against a wall and your feet apart, approximately one (1) foot away from the wall and your knees slightly bent. Lengthen through the top of the head with the shoulders relaxed back against the wall and the rib cage relaxed. Flatten the abdominals against the front of the spine (like a cumberbund) for support, but do not press your lower back against the wall.

EXERCISE
Inhale: Stand tall.

Exhale: Lengthen through the back of the neck and starting with the head, begin to peel your spine off the wall. Allow the ribs to "soften" as you curve forward. Continue rolling down until your lower back is off the wall. Keep pulling the abdominals in toward the front of the spine, so that you feel supported by them as you hang forward. Relax the neck and shoulders.

Inhale: Hold this position and breathe into the sides of the rib cage without lifting the body.

Exhale: Scoop the abdominals and roll up through the spine to a standing position one vertebra at a time, bringing the head up last. Relax the shoulders back against the wall.

Repeat 5 times.
